Heart of the island – the Barbagia

Nuoro, once the centre of shepherds and outlaws, slowly changed into the cultural capital of the island. Interestingly the most important poets and thinkers of the island have emerged from this harsh, isolated world. A striking contrast which is the topic of the ethnological museum and the birthplace of Nobel Prize winner Grazia Deledda.

High above Nuoro, Monte Ortobene offers a spectacular view over the island’s highest peaks. Then we take a walk in the neighbouring village of Orgosolo and get to know their critical wall paintings, created during social unrest from the 1960s onwards.

A lasting memory will be a typical shepherd’s lunch, where Cannonau red wine and genuine local food will be served, followed by a Sardinian su tenores choir.
